Namdaecheon, The Home of Salmon

As an unpolluted, clean river running for a total of 54km, Namdaecheon is a rare sight in Korea. It is a place where families of salmon, which have spent 3-5 years growing in the North Pacific Ocean, return to in the months of October/November, as well as white mullet in the spring and sweet fish in July/August. In addition, this place is inhabited by an abundance of rare freshwater marine life including the freshwater king crab, as well as the ground cherry,hard to find in other regions. Beginning at Odaesan (Odae Mountain), Namdaecheon meets with another river at Guryongryeong to form a large body of water that flows into the East Sea, known as the ‘mother river’ of salmon, where a festival is held each year allowing visitors to witness the struggle of the salmon

Daecheongbong– Home of the Courageous Spirit of Ancient Times

As well as being famous for its sunrise and sunset, at Daecheongbong a rug-like colony of creeping pine trees grow to only a short height due to severe weather changes, strong winds and low temperatures, making the entirety of the national park and East Sea visible at a single glance.
While snow blankets the mountain from late autumn until late spring, it becomes covered in blooming azaleas, royal azaleas and cherry blossoms in June and July. In addition, there is a rock engraved with the phrase ‘yosanyosu’ (enjoy the naturalness of mountain water) and a stone signpost for Daecheongbong.There are several routes to the peak including the Osaek way, Baekdamsa way, Seorak-dong way and the Hangyeryeong way. The quickest route spans 6km (roughly 4 hours) from Osaek to the summit, passing by the Seorak waterfall

Natural & Mysterious Hangyeryeong (Hangye Ridge)

Standing 1004 meters above sea level, Hangyeyeong (Osaekryeong) is a hill that of both joy and sorrow, where National Highway 44 links Inner Seorak with South Seorak. If you follow this road, which twists and turns just like life itself, you’ll be able to fully appreciate the magnificent scenery of South Seorak, and the misty visage of Seorak Mountain can only be seen from Hangyeryeong. If you take a look at Taekjiri (famous geography book from the Chosun Dynasty) written by Lee Junghwan, 6 ridges from the Gangwon-do region were mentioned, from which Hangyeryeong (Osaekryeong) was regarded as the best.

Cool Waterfalls & Beautiful Autumn Foliage -Osaek Jujeongol (Five Color Valley)

Osaek Jujeongol is a valley beginning in the Osaek mineral springs at the south side of Seorak Mountain National Park, passing through Seonyeo Pool until it reaches the western slope of Jeombong Mountain (1,424m). It is famous for being the most beautiful large valley in the South Seorak area, as well as for its Autumn foliage. An array of scenic spots can be discovered here and there, including Goraebawi (Whale Rock), Sangtubawi (Topknot Rock), Senunbawi (Senun Rock), Yevosimbawi (Women’s Mind Rock), Bububawi (Husband & Wife Rock), Osaekseok Temple Seonnyeo Pool, Shibi Waterfall and Yongso Waterfall.

With its large beach, smooth sand and gentle slope, Hajodae is suitable as a summer resort for families. Since its first opening in 1976, it has operated 2,722㎡ of camping grounds along with a beach from the 10th of July to 20th of August each year, and is quieter than other surrounding beaches as it doesn’t possess the same level of recreational facilities. To the south side, fresh water flows alongside an array of oddly formed rocks and strange stones as well as a rocky island, making it a great spot for fishing.

Jukdojeong–Filled with the Sound of Waves & the Aroma of Bamboo Trees

Jukdojeong was built in May of 1965 as a pavilion at the peak of Jukdo (island). As an island girt by beach with a circumference of 1km and height of 53 meters, Jukdo is densely packed with pine and bamboo trees.
If you climb up to Jukdojeong, the scene of wave-carved rocks of varying forms as well as the coastal scenery will unfurl before your eyes, and on the northern shore of Jukdo you will find a small hermitage, to which the path of the believers has been etched out.

Namae Bay, The Venice of Gangwon-do

To the 386 generation (the civil rights generation of the 1980’s), beautiful Namae Bay was an extremely memorable filming location for whale hunting. What was the life that they had truly desired?... the lyric “even if I drink, sing and dance, my heart is full of nothing but sadness” lingers in the memory. The red and white lighthouses facing each other from opposite sides of the bay add an extra element of grace, and you can even book a fishing boat and enjoy a spot of fishing on the sea.

The Beautiful Sunrise at Uisangdae, Naksan Temple

Uisangdae is a pavilion mounted on a cliff towering over the East Sea, 100 meters to the south of Naksan Temple, as was built in order to commemorate the accomplishment the great monk Uisang, founder of the Naksan Temple. Uisangdae faces the endless expanse of the clear, blue East Sea. Naksan beach is located at the bottom of the cliff on the left hand side, and to its rear is the impressive scene of the historically significant Naksan Temple and its dense pine forest.Source: Yangyang County Office Homepage.
